» Northeast Iowa's Bluffs Country: Decorah
From The Managing Editor,
As I write this it is the first week of summer break from school for Fort Dodge public school students. What I love about summer at this stage of my life is the chance to do things which aren’t possible during the rest of the year while involved in school year routines and activities.
There’s a bit more time to relax or linger over breakfast. My family always travels for vacation. We try to do some “just for fun” reading. (Through the years the Fort Dodge Public Library’s Summer Reading Program has provided additional motivation with that!) Summer provides the space to explore a new hobby, discover a new passion, or reconnect with a favorite pastime.
That’s why I’m very excited about all that this July issue has to offer readers. If you’re looking for a new activity to try with family or friends consider geocaching. It’s a great way to combine technology and actually getting out of the house and discovering the world around you. Geocaching is the newest form of treasure hunting. You’ll discover why one local family is hooked on the fun in our cover story.
We were later than usual in solidifying our vacation plans this year. For those who may still be wondering about where to go, Tom Atwood has a wonderful suggestion: Decorah, Iowa! The beauty of northeast Iowa’s Bluffs Country is waiting to entertain and enthrall visitors.
For a trip full of color and inspiration look no farther than Fort Dodge. The Federated Garden Club is hosting its annual “Tour of Secret Gardens” on Saturday, July18. Take a sneak peek at some of the things you’ll discover along the way, mark your calendars, and plan to make the trek around town. The tour promises to be a treat for all the senses.
We’ll also introduce you to two interesting folks from Fort Dodge this month. Carl Steig of Friendship Haven literally “turns” wood into gorgeous bowls. Dave Stone volunteers with the Fort Dodge Chili Lovers Society. Each of these men have unique tales to tell.
See who was spotted at this year’s Frontier Days Parade in our Scene About Town feature. Amelia Presler has some great suggestions for your reading list with July’s Book Picks. Don’t miss the Postcards from the Past page which has a musical theme this month.
Happy Summer!
